The Royal Signature Temple of King Rama I, constructed in the Ayutthaya period and is famous for its traditional Thai massage and meditation center. Moreover, the inscriptions of Wat Pho are registered as UNESCO's Memory of the World (MOW) for Asia and Pacific region.

This leading temple formerly called “Wat Potharam” was founded by King Rama I, who installed many significant Buddha images and other artifacts from the old capital of Ayutthaya. Later, King Rama III ordered to renovate and turned this temple into a center of learning, in which it is claimed as the first university of the country. This can be seen from the inscriptions on the stone tablets around the temple for further study by the public.

 

 


Attractions
• The Ubosot houses “Phra Puttha Tewaphatimakon” where the ashes of King Rama I have been kept in the basement.
• The Wihan houses the most beautiful and the fourth largest reclining Buddha in Thailand that is made of bricks and cement. The Buddha’s feet are inlaid with mother-of-pearl to display the 108 auspicious signs, which distinguish a true Buddha.
•    There are altogether 99 chedis in Wat Pho, which is the largest number of chedis in Thailand.
• 4 chedis holding the remains of the first 4 kings from the Rattanakosin era. This is similar to London Westminster Abbey where many English monarchs were buried.

• Currently, Wat Pho opens courses on traditional Thai medical sciences for interested participants with a medical certificate issued by the Ministry of Public Health.

Tips for Visiting the Buddhist temple
1. Please wear proper clothing when entering Buddhist temple; shorts, sleeveless, and slippers are unacceotable.
2. Women are not allowed to touch the monk and monk's robes and hand any object directly to the monk.
3. Please remove your shoes and hat (if any) when entering Ubosot or Wihan.
4. For healthy reason, smoking is prohibitedin public places including temple or religious site.
