What / Why :

Learn more about materials in Isan (North East region) through way of life, culture and sustainable local wisdom. And find out how the unique and eco-friendly local materials can be used in product design and generate income for the community.

In this talk, Rueng-urai Sapae, president of Tai Mueng Pia group, Baan Pai District, Khon Kaen, will share her experience of using surrounding materials in order to create an income stream and job opportunities to community based on sufficiency business administration. Using design, she adds value to luffa by creating products such as shoes, lamp and animal-shaped luffa scrubber, which are exported to European and Asian markets. Rueng-urai also found a knowledge center for the youth to learn about and carry on their local products.

Prapaipan Daengjai is the founder of Thita Natural Indigo Dyed Cloth group, whose products are competitive in the global market. She will share her revived ancient indigo dye technique dated back thousands of years. Thita’s cloth is 100% eco-friendly, 280 nanometres UV protection and has herbal attributes: skin care, fragrance and mosquito protection.

Assistant Professor Tanasit Chantaree, lecturer in architecture, will share his experience in design development with suppliers from Isan communities and explain how cultural understanding, way of life and local wisdom bring about success in product design and development.
