What / Why :

Eating riverside can be tricky. If you don’t choose wisely, chances are you’ll end up either in a loud, crowded place with passable pub grub or an overpriced tourist trap. That’s why we were glad to discover Baan Kallabok, tucked at the end of a soi by Wat Sanam Nuea pier, where you can take the ferry to Koh Kred. Cozy and casual, Baan Kallabok channels the experience of dining at home—leaving the fireworks to the Chao Praya.

The charming, vintage house is stocked with grandmotherly mismatched knickknacks, but who wants to eat inside when you can opt for a breezy riverside terrace and admire the sunset as long tail boats race by. The food is as nostalgic as the setting. The menu features a good variety of home-style Thai dishes with recommendations woven into a poem (a nice touch). The food isn’t fancy, but it impresses nonetheless, with pungent tastes and generous portions. Fish receive admirable treatment, like the best-selling pla chon lui suan, which is deep-fried till golden brown, doused in sweet and sour sauce and topped with finely chopped herbs and cashew nuts. Another must-try, the choo chee pla nuea orn (steamed fish in red curry paste) packs robust flavors, while the tom som pla two combines fresh chunks of fish with a zesty broth loaded with several local herbs, from ginger to galangal and shallots.

While not earth-shattering, down-to-earth recipes like stir-fried cabbage with fish sauce and stir-fried lotus stems with shrimp do deliver crisp veggies and just the right seasoning. Less successful are beef dishes. The grilled beef arrived lukewarm on our last visit, and a tad chewy. The yum nuea khun inn (spicy beef salad) is nicely flavored but suffers from chewy meat, too. There are only a few servers, so service can be sluggish when the family regulars start to fill up the space. But good, reasonably-priced food and a pleasant riverside view rarely go together, making Baan Kallabok a hidden gem to treasure.
