Enjoy a feast of visual aesthetics and meet and greet film directors from around the world at the 10th edition of the World Film Festival of Bangkok, which takes place at Paragon Cineplex and Esplanade Cineplex Ratchadapisek, Bangkok from November 16 to 25, 2012.
The Office of Contemporary Art and Culture, Ministry of Culture in collaboration with Nation Broadcasting Corporation, The Nation, and Major Cineplex Group is inviting movie fans to enjoy a wide variety of films at the 10th World Film Festival of Bangkok, the longest-running film festival in Thailand, which once again features a wealth of cultures and perspectives from film-makers around the globe.
This year, the festival presents a quality selection of 84 films in five categories: Cine Latino, Cinema Beat, Doc Feast, Short Wave and Asian Contemporary.
One of main attractions are the Thai films by independent directors whose creative works create new forms of communication art that are able to transcend the boundaries between author and audience.
The opening film “Mekong Hotel” is by Apichatpong Weerasethakul shuffles between fact and fiction and expresses the bonds between a vampire-like mother and her daughter, young lovers and the river.
The Closing Film “Fados” completes the musical trilogy by award-winning Carlos Saura. Using Lisbon as a backdrop, he explores Portugal’s most emblematic musical genre fado and its haunting spirit of saudade (melancholy). Tracing its African and Brazilian origins up to the new wave of modern faudistas and paying homage to legends Maria Severa and Amalia Rodrigues, Saura’s inclusive, non-purist approach conveys a grand vision of music’s power to break down boundaries and offers one of the finest “World Music” soundtracks to date. 
Thai films include Elephant Shaman by Shane Bunnag and 4 shorts: The Farmer by Natpakal Khemkhao, Ja Daw’s Choice by Tanit Jamroensuksakul, Eclipse by Natthaphon Amorntut, and A Belt And A Comb by Suthit Saja
Highlights of this year’s festival are Le Havre by Aki Kaurismaki, a heartfelt feel-good film about love; Quebec’s Lawrence Anyways, which focuses on the love between a woman and a man who has undergone a sex change; The Eyes of Thailand an American documentary on Thai Elephants; the cute teenage love story You are the apple of my eye from Taiwan, and, from Mexico Post Tenebras Lux, which won its maker a best director award.
For this year the Festival have 2 special programmes. First is the US State Department's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and the World Film Festival of Bangkok have selected documentaries that represent the American style of documentary film making, such as Connected, Elevate, Shakespeare High, and Spellbound.
The second special programme is the Dutch Film Festival in Bangkok. With the aim of promoting Dutch films to Thai audiences and to provide an open space for cultural exchange between the two countries, we have selected both movies and documentaries, among them  All We Ever Wanted, The Happy Housewife, Meet The Fokkens  and Win / Win.
This year, the Lotus Awards Ceremony for people who have devoted their careers to the film industry will be given to French director Leos Carax. Carax is coming to receive the award in person and meet the audience.
The 10th World Film Festival of Bangkok is co-organised by the Ministry of Culture, Nation Broadcasting Corporation Plc., The Nation, Major Cineplex Group Plc, Esplanade Cineplex Ratchadapisek, Paragon Cineplex, and Mango TV.
